A cartouche is a kind of nameplate. Ancient Egyptians used cartouches for kings, queens, and other high-ranking people in the kingdom. Hieroglyphics can be used to represent words in several different ways. In one way, the hieroglyphic symbol equals a whole word. In another way, a hieroglyphic symbol equals a letter or an alphabet. Hieroglyphics were often used as alphabet letters to spell out the names of people who came from countries other than Egypt.
