On June 16, 1829, Geronimo, the Apache leader and warrior, was born. Following his death on Feb. 17, 1909, his obituary appeared in The Times.

1890Stan Laurel of the comedy team Laurel and Hardy was born Arthur Stanley Jefferson in Lancashire, England.
1858accepting the Illinois Republican Party's nomination for the U.S. Senate, Abraham Lincoln said the slavery issue had to be resolved, declaring, "A house divided against itself cannot stand."
1897The United States signed a treaty of annexation with Hawaii.
1903Ford Motor Co. was incorporated.
1911The forerunner of IBM was incorporated in New York State as the Computing-Tabulating-Recording Co.
1932President Herbert Hoover was renominated at the Republican National Convention in Chicago.
