On October 1, 1961, Roger Maris of the New York Yankees hit his 61st home run of the season, breaking Babe Ruth's record of 60 set in 1927.
On Oct. 1, 1903, Vladimir Horowitz, the Russian-born pianist considered one of the most accomplished players of the 20th century, was born. Following his death on Nov. 5, 1989, his obituary appeared in The Times.
