Paravertebral Blocks: The Evolution of a Standard of Care by Kevin King, DO and Jacques E. Chelly, MD, PhD, MBA Anesthesiology News ISSUE: MARCH 2012 | VOLUME: 38:3
In 1905, Sellheim of Leipzig, Germany, first described a method to block nerves lateral to the spinal column as an alternative to central neuraxial blocks. This paravertebral approach was found to be safer than spinal anesthesia in the context of thed limited monitoring and resuscitating capacity that characterized the era. Yet 30 years later, the technique was hardly mentioned in the literature and rarely practiced. http://www.anesthesiologynews.com//download/NerveBlocks_AN0312_WM.pdf
