Históricamente, la fijación interna (FI) se ha favorecido para el tratamiento de las fracturas del cuello femoral (FNF) en pacientes jóvenes no geriátricos. Sin embargo, la literatura reciente que informa altas tasas de reoperación entre los que reciben IF, junto con la supervivencia favorable de las superficies de apoyo modernas en la artroplastia total de cadera (ATC), ha comenzado a cuestionar este paradigma. Nuestro estudio buscó comparar los resultados entre IF y THA para FNF en pacientes de 40 a 59 años.
Si bien la ATC se asocia con un aumento de la anemia posoperatoria y la utilización de recursos en comparación con la IF, los pacientes de 40 a 59 años que se someten a IF por FNF tienen un mayor riesgo de reoperación en los primeros 3 años posoperatorios. Esta información debe usarse para ayudar en la toma de decisiones compartida con pacientes en este grupo de edad.
