Barbara Arrowsmith
Barbara Arrowsmith Young fue, alguna vez, una estudiante con unas importantes dificultades en el aprendizaje que, entre otras cosas, le impedían comprender lo que leía o lo que la gente decía. Para intentar poner remedio a esta situación, Barbara inventó una serie de ejercicios mentales para ayudar a su cerebro a readiestrarse y aprender. Logró susperar sus problemas. Más tarde, ideó más ejercicios del mismo tipo para ayudar a superar esos mismo problemas a otras personas. Así nació el Colegio Arrowsmith, con una metodología dirigida a estimular las capacidades de aprendizaje
Augusta D, la primera paciente de Alzheimer
Según las notas de Alois Azheimer, cuando Augusta llegó al Hospital de Frankfurt en 1902, tenía 51 años. La paciente presentaba un cuadro de confusión, ansiedad y agitación. Examinarla, escribía Alois, resultaba muy complicado. Cuando se calmó y pudieron realizarle el exámen pertinente, el equipo de médicos concluyó que su memoria estaba dañada, tenía dificultades para hablar, se desorientaba y sufría paranoia y alucinaciones auditivas. Augusta, no supo decir su apellido y por eso terminaron por apellidarla con la letra D
