Antecedentes: La relación entre la obesidad y el asma sigue siendo definidos de forma adecuada. Estudios presentan conflictos acerca de cómo la obesidad afecta al control del asma y la función pulmonar. Enfoque adicional sobre el efecto de la edad como un modificador puede hacer más clara la interacción entre la obesidad y el fenotipo de asma.
Métodos: Un estudio longitudinal fue utilizado para determinar si la edad afecta a la relación entre la obesidad y las características del asma, incluyendo la espirometría, el control del asma, y la percepción de los cambios de flujo de aire.
Resultados: El efecto de la obesidad sobre los resultados del asma cambios con la edad y el género. Obesos 11.6 años de edad mostraron la mayor reducción de la función pulmonar, pero informó relativamente menos síntomas de asma en comparación con similares no obesos asmáticos. Obesos 12-17 años de edad mostró una tendencia hacia una mayor obstrucción al flujo aéreo y síntomas de asma en comparación con los no obesos asmáticos.
